Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Welcome to WeatherToRun. This Privacy Policy explains how our app works and how we handle your information. We follow a privacy-first approach and avoid collecting personal data whenever possible. It covers both the web app at weathertorun.app and the native iOS app.

2. Information we collect

Minimized data collection: the app does not require an account, does not sell your personal information, and limits what it stores. When you use features like the contact form, we collect only what we need to respond to you.

The app:

• On the web, uses IP-based city-level detection for an initial approximate location. On iOS, requests coarse location (roughly 3 km accuracy) through iOS Location Services when you grant permission.
• Lets you search locations manually on either platform.
• Processes scoring and gear recommendations locally in your browser or on your device.
• Does not use advertising trackers, and does not use Apple's IDFA.
• Collects anonymous usage analytics (features used, settings changed, weather conditions viewed, and on iOS, your Supporter subscription status) via PostHog on the web and iOS. On iOS, events are tagged with a device-local anonymous ID and non-identifying device metadata (iOS version, device model, app build, SDK version, locale, and a per-session ID). On the web, events are tagged with a device-local identifier managed by PostHog.
• Uses cookies on the web (last-location, locale, unit system, PWA mode) to remember your preferences between visits.
• If you use the contact form, collects the email and message you submit so we can respond.

3. How the app works

• Initial location: the web app uses approximate IP city lookup. The iOS app uses iOS Location Services (coarse, about 3 km accuracy) when you grant permission.
• Location options: manual search on either platform, browser geolocation on the web, and iOS Location Services on iOS.
• Weather data: weather forecasts on iOS and web come from Apple WeatherKit. Air quality on all platforms comes from Open-Meteo.
• Location search and reverse geocoding (web): we send your query or coordinates to OpenWeather.
• Processing: scoring and gear recommendations are generated locally in your browser or on your device.
• Reminders (iOS only): an optional daily local notification, scheduled on-device at the time you pick. No push servers are involved.
• Widget (iOS only): the home-screen widget reads your saved location and preferences from a shared on-device App Group, and fetches fresh weather from Apple WeatherKit on its own schedule (roughly hourly).

4. Third-party services

We use a small number of third-party services to operate the app. Each may process request metadata (such as IP address and timing) under its own privacy policy.

• Open-Meteo: air quality for all platforms.
• OpenWeather: location search and reverse geocoding on the web.
• Apple WeatherKit: weather forecasts for iOS and web. Apple processes these requests under its own privacy policy.
• PostHog: anonymous usage analytics on the web and iOS. Events are routed through our self-hosted reverse proxy and processed on PostHog servers in the United States. Session replay is enabled on the web with form inputs masked.
• Google Analytics: aggregated web analytics in production.
• Sentry: error and performance monitoring on the web. May capture request URLs, error details, and breadcrumbs to help us diagnose bugs, with sensitive parameters filtered.
• Vercel Speed Insights: aggregated web performance metrics.
• Resend: delivers contact form submissions by email.
• Apple App Store Connect: provides Apple with aggregated, privacy-preserving metrics (installs, sessions, crashes) for the iOS app, under Apple's privacy terms.
• Apple App Store and StoreKit (iOS only): processes payment data for the optional Supporter subscription. Apple handles your card details, Apple ID, and billing address under its own privacy policy. We never see your payment information. You can manage or cancel the subscription at any time through Settings, Apple ID, Subscriptions.

5. Data privacy and security

• We minimize stored user data.
• No account is required on either platform.
• Preferences are stored on your device: localStorage and cookies on the web, UserDefaults and SwiftData on iOS. The iOS home-screen widget reads a subset of these through a shared on-device App Group.

6. Your rights and choices

• Web: clear local preferences and cookies from your browser settings, and manage location permission in your browser permissions.
• iOS: manage location in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security, and manage the daily reminder in iOS Settings under Notifications.

7. International data transfers

Third-party infrastructure may process requests in multiple regions.

8. Changes to this privacy policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the app after updates means acceptance of the revised policy.
